The area’s specialist caravan-manufacturing traditions remain strong within the East Riding – having the largest concentration of caravan and mobile home manufacturers in the country. A grand total of 90% of the UK’s static caravan and lodge manufacturing is undertaken in the area.
East Yorkshire’s Swift Group is among the UK’s largest manufacturer of touring caravans, motorhomes and holiday homes, giving employment to over 1,200 people and turning over £250 million.

The East Riding has a thriving chemicals cluster, comprising of experts in personal care, agro-chemicals, fine chemicals, paint and coatings, surface treatments, speciality chemicals as well as inorganic and organic commodities.
With a new multi-million pound hub in Goole, as well as a site in Hull, the East Riding is home to the headquarters of FTSE-listed smart science specialists, Croda, who played a key role in the production of Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine.
Currently under construction, Siemens Mobility will soon open a £200m train manufacturing plant in Goole. The site will facilitate the manufacturing, assembly, testing and welfare of a new generation of tube trains for the London Underground.
When fully completed, the facility, which covers 67 acres of land, will employ up to 700 staff, and so far the project has seen contracts worth £50m awarded to UK companies – the majority of which are based locally in Yorkshire and include Hessle and Brandesburton-based businesses.
Developed in partnership with Siemens Mobility and the University of Birmingham, the RaisE Business Centre and Innovation Hub will be adjacent to the Siemens Mobility train factory on the Goole 36 Enterprise Zone. The hub will provide high-tech managed workspaces and R&D facilities for SMEs in manufacturing, engineering, and rail supply chains.
